BOISE -- The federal government's Help America Vote Act is bringing new voting machines to all of Idaho's nearly 1,000 polling places.

Idaho plans to install 900 of the new voting machines in time for the 2006 elections. They are geared to help disabled citizens take part in the election process. The machines are designed to help people with disabilities vote.
They allow users to mark a ballot by blowing through a straw, using braille or other methods.
But Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysursa says he wishes the $5.5 million being spent on the effort could go to help disabled residents every day of the year, instead of being used just for election equipment.
He worries that in some areas, the expensive machines will sit unused.
