Table of Contents & Introduction

It is our pleasure to bring you our newsletter in an electronic and (hopefully) user-friendly format. This area of our site features the full content of past newsletters as well as a sneak peak at certain upcoming articles. However, we realize that, since upcomin content has not yet been printed, and not everyone has access to the web, we are more than happy to provide a preliminary printed copy of "preview" material for anyone upon request.

ARTICLE: What's Up, DAC?
Well, it is that time of year again! Yes, it is fall and there is the smell of footballs in the air, but most importantly for DAC and other federal grant recipients, is that it is the end of the old federal fiscal year and the beginning of the new one. And, as so often seems to be the case these years, the federal government is operating on a continuing resolution, which basically means we are all in a bit of limbo if we are expecting any new money...

ARTICLE: Help End Housing Discrimination
The Intermountain Fair Housing Council (IFHC), based in Boise, ID, investigates allegations from people who believe they have been denied housing or have been treated unequally because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, mental or physical disability, or familial status (generally the presence of children under age 18). One means by which IFHC investigates is testing for housing discrimination...

ARTICLE: New DAC Staff Biography: Steve Corr
“When your ability to succeed is greater than your fear of failure, you’re making progress.” That is an all-time favorite quote of Steve Corr, the newest member of DAC’s team. Although he started working for DAC as an Independent Living Advocate just weeks ago, Steve has already demonstrated his commitment and determination. One of his first tasks with DAC was to help lead a presentation at Washington State University on the history of the Independent Living Movement (our director, Mark Leeper, was not available, as he was lobbying at the Capitol). Although it was a somewhat last-minute endeavor, we were much impressed—as was the WSU audience—with Steve’s confidence and leadership...

ARTICLE: North Idaho Assistive Technology Project
Assistive Technology, also called Assistive Tech or “AT” can assist individuals of all ages to live more productive and satisfying lives. Assistive technology can be as simple as a large handle on a spoon or a bath bench. It may be as complicated as a voice-recognition computer. Equipment, resources and evaluation are available at the site to help a wide variety of people...

ARTICLE: Need a TTY or Amplified Phone?
Subsidies are available from the Idaho Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to help people purchase equipment such as TTYs, amplified telephones, assistive listening systems, and alerting systems. Also available are corded and cordless telephones that amplify voices up to 55 decibels and allow you to adjust the tone of both the incoming voices and the phone ringer. Devices that let the user read an incoming message from a relay operator and respond by voice are also an option...

ARTICLE: DAC Event Update
Since the publication of our last newsletter, Mark Leeper, director of DAC Northwest, Inc., has been engaged in such things as lobbying at the Capitol for disability rights-related legislation. He also has been attending the usual meetings of the various boards of directors he serves on. Additionally this month, Mark has been making re-organization efforts to improve the team-work of the staff of the Moscow and Lewiston DAC offices...
