Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Access

DAC staff, volunteers, and consumers were excited to gather in Boise beginning Jan 31st through Feb 3rd for the semi-annual conference of the Idaho State Independent Living Council.

Motivating and empowering, there were more than 15 informative and educational workshops and events lasting nearly four days. Such topics featured included funding home modifications, self-determination, assistive technology, Idaho Legislature, and many others—all presented by key leaders in the Independent Living Movement, such as Mark Leeper, Director of DAC; Roger Howard, Director of LINC; Bobbie Ball, of the ADA Task Force; Kelly Buckland, SILC President; Erick Yeary; Ron Seiler; of the University of Idaho; and many others.

Beginning at the Boise Centre, Greg Smith, the “Strength Coach,” shared with us his remarkable journey. Born with muscular dystrophy, Greg is 65 pounds of strength and energy. In his deep and commanding voice, he told heart-wrenching—and sometimes humorous—stories about his life.

The highlight of our trip was the march to the Idaho State Capitol building, where a powerful and unforgettable rally was held. As many people who attended had not been to Boise, the capitol of Idaho, excitement rippled through our group. Eyes lit up with fiery passion and faces were filled with determination. As we gathered for our march to the Capitol, it was clear that everyone knew there are still goals to be met and voices to be heard. Soon, the once silent square was filled with the rallying cries and cheers of “Hey, Ho, Discrimination’s got to go!” As we wove our way though the streets of downtown Boise, many people turned their heads, and some even flashed a “thumbs up.” Several cars honked their horns; shoppers paused—seemingly taken aback by the sight of so many people.

Once the march reached the Capitol, we gathered at the steps. A spirited rally for change soon followed, with many speakers from the Idaho Legislature. The podium was on the first landing, up about ten stairs; suddenly, Mike Smith of Moscow, slid from his wheelchair and climbed the steps of the Capitol on this elbows. The crowd cheered him on and, as he reached the top, he was assisted on either side while he spoke to the large crowd. The crowd became overwhelmed with emotion; many people had even begun to weep.

One is easily filled with pride and humility to be a member of this group of remarkable and determined people. The courage witnessed as our consumers spoke with passion for the need to revolutionize our laws, along with the challenges faced in their day-to-day lives to their Representatives, will live in our hearts forever.

Alone, we are just one small voice. But together, our voices will join in a powerful chorus for human rights, equality, and change. We will triumph; and we will succeed in life, liberty, the pursuit of access. <>
