In my experience, I have noticed when most people think of assistive technology, they think of $8,000 communication devices or $10,000 computer access systems. They do not think about the possibility that there may be low-tech (or at least cheaper) options. Some low-tech alternatives can be purchased for a minimal amount or even made with PVC pipe, Velcro and duct tape!

Consider this scenario – A man thinks he needs to obtain a high-tech communication device for his wife who just had a stroke and is still in the hospital. She cannot speak and has limited movement. Instead of obtaining a high-tech device before she recovers, an option would be to make an eyegaze board with PVC pipe and pictures. As her needs change, her communication system can change to meet her needs. Eventually, she may or may not need a high tech device.

ovement. Instead of obtaining a high-tech device before she recovers, an option would be to make an eyegaze board with PVC pipe and pictures. As her needs change, her communication system can change to meet her needs. Eventually, she may or may not need a high tech device.

Another scenario – A woman who loves to use the computer loses the ability to use her hands. She is told about a great technology that would allow her to use the computer by using her retinas. Although I will admit this technology is really cool, not everyone can afford it, and there are other great alternatives, such as Dragon NatraullySpeaking. This software has made leaps and bounds in the past few years. It used to take several hours to program this voice recognition software, but today it takes approx. 10 minutes. It’s great!

Food for thought – “low-tech first, then high-tech as needed” <>
