A special K-9 is being recognized for saving her owner's life by dialing, yes dialing 911.
She proceeded by trying to "talk" to the dispatcher on the phone.
The four-year-old Rottweiler is named Faith and that's exactly what her owner has in her.
Faith can not only detect when her owner is about to have an epileptic seizure, but she's also trained to push the phone off it's cradle and press a color-coded speed dial button for help.
It was on the morning of September 7th when 911 dispatcher, Jenny Buchanan, answered the call.
“I heard a dog barking and it was very loud in a persistent manner,” said Buchanan. “The dog was upset and sounded like it was trying to tell me there was a problem at the house.”
As a trained service dog, Faith was trying to summon help for her owner, Leana Beasley, who had fallen from her wheelchair and was unconscious on the kitchen floor.
The last thing I remember is reaching across the stove so I could heat up some water,” said Beasley. “It was like someone turned the light out inside of me.”
Corporal Scott Morrell of the Richland Police Department was dispatched to the residence, and because Faith was trained to recognize uniformed personnel, she unlocked the door for him with her teeth.
“Faith showed him where I was at and he called for the paramedics,” said Beasley. “She also alerted him that I was going to have another seizure.”
On Thursday Leana Beasley got to meet and thank the people who helped save her life and Benton County Emergency Management held a ceremony to honor the amazing K-9.
“She's more than man’s best friend,” said Beasley. “She's a lifeline for me.”
Leana Beasley says compared to other service dog she's had in the past Faith is the most intelligent. She also knows how to turn off light switches, flush the toilet, and help Beasley with grocery shopping.
